Peru & Machu Picchu
From Lima we drove about 7 hours south to the Nazca area. This is one of the tombs recently found in the desert nearby. It is a Pre-Inca Chincha site that dates from the 4th Century AD. The high level of nitrates in the soil preserved the mummies. Grave robbers have stolen most of the pottery and offerings in the graves. The bodies were eviscerated and tied into the fetal position, and then dried slowly beside the hearth. The dead in both Inca and Pre-Inca times were considered to still be part of the family.
