Peru & Machu Picchu
The ruins of an Inca sun temple and residential area are perched on a steep cliff above the Sacred Valley. A stone post is carved into the black rock of the altar. It served as a place to ceremonially "tie" the sun at the solstice to ensure that it would continue its journey back across the horizon. Many of these sacred stones (Intiwatana - Hitching Post of the Sun) are found in Inca temples around Cusco.
