Monte Albán is an impressive archaeological site on a hilltop across the river from Oaxaca. It was a city of 26,000 people occupied by Zapotec then Mixtec cultures from 450AD to 700AD. This photo was taken from the North Platform looking over the administrative patio (with its columns) toward System 4, several temple mounds, and the Oaxaca Valley. The town, primarily for nobility, had several neighborhoods; each with a temple, an altar, an administrative patio, and residences.
