Oat Hill Mine Trail

This Woolly Paintbrush (Castilleja foliolosa) bush has both red and yellow flowers - and is growing under a Chamise bush (Adenostema fasciculatum). The red & yellow colors are the bracts (modified leaves) - the flower itself is a small, narrow green pouch with a stigma protruding. Most of the paintbrushes are pollinated by hummingbirds. Bees visit them, but are too small to be effective pollinators.
