Mosquera Island Mosquera Island is surrounded by clear tropical waters and hosts a large colony of sea lions. The Galapagos islands probably formed from a mantle plume like Hawaii, a column of hot lava that rose from deep within the Earth. Some islands still have eruptions as they pass over the hot spot. The Pacific is nearly 10,000' deep just 20 miles off shore.
