Lava Gull (Larus fuliginosus) We saw a rare Lava Gull (Larus fuliginosus) right in downtown Puerto Ayora! It is one of the rarest gulls in the world - only 300 to 400 pairs are estimated to exist. All live in the Galapagos Islands. Lava Gulls have white upper and lower eyebrows, which vary between individuals. The inside of the mouth is scarlet. The immature bird is mostly brown. This bird has been banded by researchers at Darwin Center down the street. Puerto Ayora.
