Opuntia and Carpetweed Plazas is bathed in dramatic colors with the Opuntia and the Carpetweed. In the cool season the Carpetweed (Sesuvium edmonstonei) turns bright orange-red. It has a white flower that looks just like a blackberry flower. The Opuntia here are no longer very tall - since the El Nino in 1983/4. Portulaca also grows here, but it has yellow flowers. Without any flowers Carpetweed and Portulaca look quite similar. South Plaza Island.
