Santa Fe Prickly Pear (Opuntia echios var. barringtoninsis) Santa Fe Island is small - one extinct volcano. We visited it on the way back to Santa Cruz from Espanola - which was a long way south. In stark contrast to Espanola Island (where there are hardly any prickly pear because of a large goat population in the past) Santa Fe island is covered with healthy tall Opuntia. Santa Fe Island is known for its extremely tall and wide Opuntia (Opuntia echios var. barringtoninsis). The trunk of this cactus can be 4' wide and 35' tall. Santa Fe Island.
