Galapagos Tortoise in the Wild We were able to see Galapagos tortoises in the wild at Rancho Permiso in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island. It is eating passionfruit (Passiflora edulis) on the trail. The females lay their eggs in soft soil. Then they urinate on the top layer of dirt as they cover the hole. This makes a nice adobe cover that sometimes can resist cows hoofs and digging rats. The young hatch with a yolk that nourishes them for one month. Santa Cruz Island.
