Galapagos Penguin Today we went swimming with Galapagos Penguins (Spheniscus mendiculus)! We were sad to discover that 77% of them starved to death in 1983 and another 65% were lost after the 1997-8 El Nino. Both times the water became unusually warm. The penguins don't breed in water warmer than 75 degrees. Their nesting habitat is being reduced by illegal fisherman who chop down and burn mangrove trees to gather and cook sea cucumbers. Less than 1,000 breeding pairs are left. Bartolome.
