Lava Cactus Lava Cactus (Brachycereus nesioticus) prefers to grow on barren lava flows, as opposed to Opuntia that likes some soil. The Lava Cactus grows only in the Galapagos and is quite rare. It is a relatively new inhabitant on this isolated island. Crevices like this can be formed by uplift, or the collapse of lava tubes. Genovesa Island.
