Landing in Quito Surrounded by Volcanoes Landing in Quito, Ecuador. Quito is the world's 2nd highest capital city at 9,252'. (The highest is La Paz at 9,348'.) The Central Highlands are tucked between peaks in the Avenue of the Volcanoes. Quito is growing rapidly and creeping up the slopes of Pichincha Volcano. On our first visit in 1975 our flight was delayed and the airport still didn't have runway lights. We landed after sunset that night - truly terrifying! Quito was one of the most dangerous airports in the world at that time.
