The tiny Poison Arrow Frog is the source the Indians used on their hunting arrows. It has an alkaloid poison so potent that it can paralyze a large bird or a small monkey immediately. It is one of the most potent toxins known to man. Some types are red and blue like this one, and the Harlequin species is green and black. The bright colors warn predators, because it is useless to the frog if its attacker dies after eating him! Because of this protection these frogs are active in the daytime. The female lays her eggs on the ground and then carries them up to a bromiliad leaf cup.
