Apsara under a Rainbow

Some of the carvings, like this Apsara, were painted. This apsara is standing under a rainbow Naga. Rainbow Nagas are also frequently found along the tops of walls. The entire Angkor complex was abandoned in 1432. Pilgrims continued to visit, and still do to this day - both Hindus and Buddhists. Under Phol Pot and the following Communist government all religious practices were forbidden. The current coalition government lifted the ban on religion in 1989, and most of the population is Buddhist.
