BEP Mushrooms

The Umber-brown Puffball (Lycoperdon umbrinum) is one of the common gemmed puffballs shaped like a top. The gems are the groups of short brown cone-shaped spines among small granules on the surface of its skin. On this species the spines do not leave a scar if they fall off. When mature the mass of spores inside are purple-brown, as is the sterile base. On this specimen, the skin is cracked but the spores inside are not ripe yet, and the pore at the top that releases the spores is not yet developed.
