BEP Mushrooms

Candlesnuff Fungus (Xylaria hypoxylon) antlers start out club-shaped, but develop more prongs as they grow. These young specimens still have their powdery white tips, but soon they will become all black and quite rough. The black stalk is tough and wiry despite its delicate appearance. They produce both sexual spores (dark brown) and asexual spores (white as a group, but clear individually). This group of tiny snuffers was found on a moss covered tanoak stump.
