This Maze Polypore fungus looks much like a Turkey-tail fungus on the top, but the underside is totally different! Most polypores are wood decay fungi. They recycle either the white cellulose or the brown lignin in the tree - or both. Brown rot fungi destroy the cellulose but leave the cell walls behind, White rot fungi destroy the lignin and leave nothing but brown powder behind. Brown rot fungi might prove to be useful to remove the lignin for the manufacture of paper and in cleaning up toxics in spill sites.
