Bohemia Ecological Preserve

This Yellow Flower Spider is starting to roll a blackberry leaf to hide her egg case. She can change color by secreting a yellow pigment into the outer cell layer of their body. On a white base, this pigment is transported into lower layers, so that inner glands become visible. If she stays on a white plant, the yellow pigment can be excreted. It takes her much longer to change to yellow, because she has to produce the yellow pigment first. The color change from white to yellow takes between 10 and 25 days - the reverse about six days!
