Bohemia Ecological Preserve

Most of this sample is Lace Lichen (Ramalina menzieii). Some is Usnea. The 2003 plant list shows 18 different species of Usnea lichens at Bohemia! Half of them hang from the branches oak trees, many on conifers, and one species grows on both. One species is rare, the rest are common. Where the air is unpolluted, Usnea can grow to 8" long. Usnic acid is a potent antibiotic and antifungal agent that is found in all species. In an emergency it has been used as a sterile bandage.
