Bohemia Ecological Preserve

Giant Horsetails are a Fern Ally indicating that it doesn't have flowers. These were sending up reproductive shoots. For over one hundred million years Horsetails were much more diverse and dominated the understory of late Paleozoic forests. It is said that the pattern of spacing of nodes in horsetails, getting increasingly close together toward the top, inspired John Napier to discover logarithms. It is in its own family, Equisetaceae.
