Western Azaleas can grow in chaparral areas as well as in riparian areas. Those that grow in warmer, drier chaparral tend to have flowers with a lot more pink and brighter yellows. There is considerable diversity in the form and appearance of this species. The genetic diversity reaches its highest level along the coast between California and Oregon. Western Azaleas are even tolerant of serpentine soils as well as surface water. Heath Family.
