Fire kills the above-ground portion of the California Hazelnut, but it re-sprouts fairly readily after fire. In fact American Indians in California and Oregon used fire to encourage hazelnut growth, because they used hazelnuts for food, baskets, medicine, and other purposes. The seeds are dispersed by jays and rodents such as Grey and Douglas Squirrels. It is a close relative of the Filbert. Birch Family.
