Bohemia Ecological Preserve

Toyon can grow to 20' tall, an evergreen with white flowers in summer and red berries in winter. The berries are edible but don't taste good - and contain cyanide compounds that can kill you if you eat a few pounds. (The same cyanide compounds volatilize off and leave a cherry flavor when cooked.) The birds can eat them. Deer eat the new growth and leaves below four feet. The leaves are sharply toothed. Rose Family.
