Yerba Santa (Sacred Herb) was introduced to the Spanish Padres by the Salinan people. It became one of 3 major medicinal herbs used at the mission. Leaves were smoked or chewed to relieve asthma, coughs, colds, headaches, and stomachaches. Mashed leaves were applied to sores, cuts, wounds, and aching muscles. The branches and leaves were burned in steam baths to treat rheumatism. Bees visit the flowers of Yerba Santa, which makes a deliciously spicy amber honey. Newly in the Borage Family.
