Shepherd's Needle is a small introduced plant in the Carrot Family. One of the 5 tiny petals is longer than the other 4. It is named for its long fruit, which has a thickened body up to 1/2" long and a beak which can measure up to 3" long and is lined with comb-like bristles. The Latin name pecten-veneris means 'Venus's comb'; this name arose because the fruits tend to be arranged side-by-side, and were thought to look like a comb.
