Bohemia Ecological Preserve

Notice the stigma of these Padre's Shooting Stars peeking out between the dark anthers. After fertilization each blossom turns upward as the seed grows. This species grows on serpentine and usually has dark anthers as opposed to yellow anthers like the Coastal Shooting Star. Padre's have a red stem, but Coastal Shooting Star (Dodecatheon hendersonii) has a green stem. Complicating the ID, the two species sometimes hybridize. Primrose Family.
