The California Slender Salamander looks more like a worm than an amphibian because its legs are extremely small. It has no lungs and breathes through its skin. (Avoid handling it, then only gently with clean, wet hands.) It is the most common salamander in CA, but isn't often seen unless you are looking under rocks and leaf litter. It eats mites, spiders and snails and in hot weather it retreats to mouse burrows to keep cool and moist.
