Sargent Cypress is endemic to California, where it occurs on serpentine soil from Mendocino county south to Santa Barbara county. This tree can grow to be over 70' tall, often in pure same-age stands following a fire. The closed cones of Sargent Cypress usually open after a wildfire so that seedlings can germinate in bare soil. The disturbance of a landslide (or road building) sometimes can also cause cones to open and seeds to germinate.
